On Wednesday, bidders got another chance at it—and the work resold at Sotheby’s for $85.4 million.
Looming 12 feet over audiences like an oversize reel of film reel stuck on pause, Warhol’s “White Disaster ” is the largest single-panel version of the artist’s car crashes to have ever come to auction. Both its seller and winning telephone bidder remain anonymous. It is also the first large-scale example from his “Death and Disaster” series to come up for bid since Sotheby’s sold his “
” in 2013 for $105.4 million. That sale made history, as it marked the first time anything created by Warhol had crossed the $100-million mark at auction.
