Andy Reid didn’t need another Lombardi Trophy to define his legacy. But the Chiefs’ second Super Bowl in four seasons and how they pulled off that feat only further exemplified Reid’s greatness, writes ByMikeJones.
Kansas City players credit Reid’s demeanor and motivational skills for their success in the face of adversity. He didn’t give any profound speech during halftime. He simply challenged his players to further elevate their level of play for themselves and for their teammates.
“Let’s go be ourselves. Play with a little more fire,” Kelce said, relaying Reid’s message. “That was the end of the discussion right there: Play for the guy next to you.”“He’s the ultimate challenger. He can relate to you and bring the best out of you. I wish I could explain it but that’s what makes him the greatest,” Kelce said.
Reid’s touch has never seemed stronger or more effective, however. And so he scoffs at the notion of retiring. “I look in the mirror and I’m old. My heart, though, is young and I’m enjoying what I’m doing,” Reid said. “If they’ll have me, I’ll stick around.” The Chiefs certainly will have him, and so Reid aims to keep on coaching. Not because he feels like he still has something to prove, or some Hall of Fame coach to chase, but because he still loves the game, still loves challenges, and above all, loves his players. And that may go down as one of his greatest legacies all.Subscribe to The Athletic for in-depth coverage of your favorite players, teams, leagues and clubs. Try a week on us.
