The Movie Emperor premiered at TIFF.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Ning Hao's latest satire, The Movie Emperor, makes perfect use of Hong Kong screen legend Andy Lau. The movie is perfectly suited for the Toronto International Film Festival, where it just premiered, thanks to its skillful skewering of the film industry and the superficiality of some of its stars.
The director basically gave me the script, and I spotted that the character's name was Wai-Chi Lau. Then, of course, it somehow hit me and really piqued my interest. So, I decided to take it just to experience not being so popular. How does that feel in the movie? Andy, we see early on that Wai-Chi is a man who doesn't know how to communicate with either loved ones or colleagues, but acting is a job that requires communication above all else. How does that affect both his career and relationships in the film?
Ning Hao: In the role that Andy has been playing, he has the [high class] look. I'm not gonna even go there. [Laughs] I just want to touch upon the fact that when it comes to this subject matter in the internet era, people tend to pick what they would like to see or what they like to hear. It seems to be so easy to communicate with each other via internet, but it's actually so difficult.
The only answer to that question that I'm gonna tell you is you have to watch the movie. Before the movie, I thought that I had thousands of ways to resolve this. But after shooting this movie, I have learned so much from everybody, so you've just got to watch the movie to find that answer.
