Andie MacDowell opened up about her struggle with piriformis syndrome on 'The Drew Barrymore Show', sharing her experience with pain and how she manages it through daily exercise. The actress also discussed her decision to leave Hollywood for a simpler life in South Carolina and her evolving relationship with her grown children.
Andie MacDowell revealed on 'The Drew Barrymore Show' that she's been battling piriformis syndrome, a painful neuromuscular disorder. 'I have piriformis syndrome, so it's a muscle that kind of clamps down on my sciatic nerve, and it was shooting down my leg,' MacDowell shared. 'I thought I was going to have hip replacement — thank God, my hips are fine,' she remarked.
The 66-year-old actress explained that the syndrome causes inflammation when the piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve, leading to pain or numbness in the buttock and down the back of the leg. MacDowell shared that she's been managing the condition through daily exercises, focusing on her hips and bottom. 'I have to work my tiny little bottom and my hips. I have to work the bottom and work my hip. I just do it every day… it doesn’t hurt anymore… it’s a miracle,' she said.During the interview, MacDowell also opened up about her experience with an indoor cycling routine that initially led to worsened symptoms. 'It's not appropriate for my body, and I ended up with bad knees… a bad hip,' she explained. 'The good news is my pieces are fine,' MacDowell said. 'My knees are good except for aging. They've aged.' She emphasized the importance of staying physically active as one ages, suggesting weightlifting and working with a physical therapist to maintain muscle strength. MacDowell also shared some personal insights into her life outside of Hollywood. She revealed that she relocated to South Carolina for a simpler lifestyle. Reflecting on her children growing older and moving out, she admitted, 'Everything changes, it’s a hard shift,' adding, 'You hear about how a lot of mothers… are happy… they’re free… I didn’t have that feeling, I still don’t have that feeling. I’ve had to work really hard on my independence.' MacDowell is a mother of three, daughters Margaret and Rainey, and son Justin, who all share her passion for acting.
