In honor of SesameStreet’s 50th anniversary, we asked several of its A-list visitors to share their treasured memories of appearing on the show
it felt like a different world. It always seemed so craft-y with the hand-painted sets. When they asked me to be on the show, I was like, Oh, my God, of course. It was the first time someone had sketched an outfit for me to wear. I was really blown away by the puppeteers and how they had to move their bodies and how physically hard that must be. It’s 100% skill and I just appreciate that. And then playing with [the Muppets] was so much fun; they’re bouncy, they’re just fun.
“I filmed this in 2005, so I’d been doing comedy about 18 years. I performed a lot at Luna Lounge in the Lower East Side. There was a Monday night show called “Eating It” which was sort of the epicenter of the New York “alt” scene—I hate that term, but it helps paint a picture. I believe that’s where I metAt the time it didn’t really feel like I was onbut after it aired I started hearing from people I hadn’t talked to in a while. They’d say things like, So, I’m watchingwith my two-year-old.
“I was a fan from watching with my kids so it was a no-brainer. I wanted to be associated with something that was educational and entertaining and changing the whole concept of entertainment for kids. One of my favorite segments was the one explaining difficult and easy. I go up the steps and I say this is difficult for me, and a little girl goes up the steps and says that’s easy for her. Then I play the violin and I say that’s easy for me, and she says playing the violin is difficult for her.
