Review: Season two of AJLT allows Carrie Bradshaw to process her grief while pushing her forward—adding a welcome new momentum to the series.
’s Big sending our hero, Carrie Bradshaw , reeling. Blessedly, that white-hot emotional moment has passed, and season two concerns itself with the more mundane, practical concerns of life after love. Carrie is hosting a podcast, sleeping with her producer, and tending to the neuroses of a book release—she’s written a memoir about losing her husband, a more serious bit of writing than she’s done before.
While season two affords Carrie some opportunity to keep processing her loss, it also urges her forward, adding a welcome new momentum to the series. Reader, there is even a contained episode in which a character meets a guy, dates him, and then breaks things off before the end credits. Just like they used to do in the salad days! While still far more serialized than the original series ever was,does return some to the structure of old, its thematic framework and episode-long complications.
In one episode, Charlotte and her husband, Harry , deal with an ejaculatory problem in a fashion as silly and vaguely icky as anything onever was. One of the newer characters, Lisa , grumbles about her teenage son’s handsy, no-boundaries girlfriend and sets up a booby trap in her bed to make sure her kid isn’t having sex in it. Miranda meets a seductive literary power lesbian who turns out to be far less glamorous than hoped.
Those sound like the kicky little plotlines of the previous show, don’t they? They’re not quite as zippy or engaging; maybe nothing ever can be, because we are all older and the world has spun into vastly new understandings about sex and dating and self. But the attempt is appreciated. So is the way thatweaves its newer players—like Lisa, and Seema , and Nya —more fully into the fabric of the show.
Well, maybe Nya is. Poor Pittman is stuck in a sad little storyline about Nya’s crumbling marriage, mostly left alone and talking on the phone to Miranda, who is in Los Angeles while her lover, Che , films a TV pilot. It’s not fair to Nya to have her closest friend in the group off on the West Coast, nor is it fair to viewers.
