Ahead of the return of AndJustLikeThat, writer, director and producer Michael Patrick King joined writer (and SexandtheCity fan) Evan Ross Katz for lunch, to talk Che Diaz memes, the empty chair that never was, and the changing dynamics of the show.
“My dream – and it didn’t work out – was for that dinner table to have an empty chair between Carrie and Charlotte. The catchphrase was going to be, ‘Life’s a feast. You’re invited.’” He knew that the internet would have a field day Photoshopping images into the chair: Baby Yoda, Bernie Sanders, etc. “Can you imagine? It would have been fantastic.” And King knew people would wonder who the chair is for.
He’s careful with his words, but not in a way that’s for show. “I don’t tell people what I’m giving them for a gift until they open it. You can know you’re getting a gift, but what’s in the box is still [my] secret.” Aswhen the news of Samantha’s appearance first broke, Cattrall allegedly shot her single scene without seeing or speaking to King or the show’s lead, Sarah Jessica Parker. He’s keen to dispel the “Samantha’s back” angle.
