New findings are helping archaeologists clarify what we know about ancient South American civilizations.

In the months since, the team has uncovered evidence of two temples separated by centuries. The older temple possibly dates to about 4,000 years ago, while the more recent temple may date to more than 1,400 years ago.Findings at the Initial Period Temple The figure is like others found in sites from the nearby Casma Valley also dating to the Initial Period, leading Muro Ynoñan and his colleagues to believe these structures were contemporary and shared a religious tradition.
“We have very good evidence that human sacrifice was a common practice in ancient Peru,” Muro Ynoñan says, though he adds that more work would be needed to confirm or deny this also happened in the older era at La Otra Banda.
