Researchers have noticed little human footprints—remnants of an ancient playground—inside the fossilized tracks of a giant ground sloth.

Atop the bleached dunes of White Sands National Park in New Mexico lie the 40-centimeter footprints of a now-extinct giant ground sloth that roamed more than 11 centuries ago. Within those tracks, researchers noticed little human footprints —reports.

The way the tracks were deformed hints that a group of small children romped around in fresh sloth prints that had filled with water, according to the unpublished analysis. If confirmed, the jaunty scene would add to scientists’ understanding of some of the first humans to frolic in prehistoric North America.
