Nine ballot propositions feature in next month’s regular municipal election, and none come with a higher price tag than Proposition 1.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Nine ballot propositions feature in next month’s regular municipal election, and none come with a higher price tag than Proposition 1.is the biggest bond Anchorage voters are being asked to approve on the April 2 ballot. The Anchorage School District says the money will go for security and safety upgrades as well as structural improvements for multiple schools across the district.

The bond includes replacements for the roofs at Alpenglow Elementary, Central Middle School and Chugiak High School, which have been repaired numerous times and no longer meet current codes, according to ASD Chief Operating Officer Jim Anderson. Bond money would also pay to install security vestibules at Kasuun, Klatt and Lake Hood elementary schools. The district plans to put enhanced security at the entrance to every school. A district spokesperson says 30 schools have received the security vestibules so far.

In addition, the bond package includes nearly $19 million to rebuild Inlet View Elementary School, an issue that has proved controversial in the past. In 2022, voters refused to pass a school bond that included $26 million to rebuild the elementary school. Many said they favored a remodel of the school which would initially be less expensive.
