ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Students at three Anchorage Elementary schools went into the classroom on Wednesday coping with the challenging news that their school will close at the end of this year, following Tuesday’s school board meeting.
Facing a $90 million deficit, the Anchorage School Board voted to close Fire Lake, Lake Otis and Campbell STEM Elementary schools. A day later, the news is still sinking in for those communities. “I was really sad about my school closing. I’m worried about my friends, what school they are going to go to, and I don’t know if my grades are going to go up or go down or stay where they are,” said Campbell STEM student Anakin Harris. “I don’t, I don’t want, I’m going to be missing, I will miss my teacher and all my friends.” Campbell STEM Elementary has the unique distinction of being the only STEM school in the state. Now, students and parents alike are wondering what’s next. “This was a rash decision, and a quick decision, and I don’t think that they took enough time to consider,” said Brittanee Harris’s mother and a Campbell alum herself. “The other part of this is — this was a STEM school,” Brittanee continued. “There were already constructions done up for a remodel of Campbell’s STEM that the STEM program was going to sponsor and pay for, and it was going to be an amazing change and upgrade for the community, not just Campbell’s STEM.Throughout the previous night’s meeting, the school board members and superintendent acknowledged the difficulty of the decision. “It’s never a good feeling. It feels personal, I know, to them, even though it’s not,” said Board Member Andy Holleman in an interview after the meeting. “All of these schools, I think, are doing an excellent job. But we do have more space than we have students right now, and we don’t know when that’s going to turn around.”‘I heard her screaming’: Rapid deportation case may signal change of pace in Alaska immigration proceedings‘It was incredibly swift’: Why an Alaska family was removed to Mexico this week, one son sent to Tacoma ICE facility FridayNome brothers summit Mt.
