ANCHORAGE , Alaska - State Sen. Matt Claman , D- Anchorage , became the 14th candidate to enter the race for governor after he announced his bid in a press release Monday. “As Governor, I’ll work every day to ensure our state government reflects the values we all share: safe streets, great schools, business-friendly regulations and a growing economy that works for businesses and working families,” Claman said in a prepared statement Monday.
Before entering the Alaska Legislature in 2015, Claman served as acting mayor of Anchorage during the 2008-2009 financial crisis. The attorney and former Anchorage Assembly chair came to Alaska in 1980, and writes in his legislative biography he initially worked as a cook in remote mining camps before establishing a law practice. Claman, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee and has served in the legislature for nearly 11 years, filed a letter of intent to run for governor with the Claman is the third member of Alaska’s legislature who has signaled an intent at running for the state’s executive branch, the other two being Sen. Shelley Hughes, R-Palmer, and former Senate Minority Leader Mike Shower, R-Wasilla, who is businesswoman Bernadette Wilson’s candidate for Lieutenant Governor.
