The Anchorage School District is changing the protocol it uses to keep students safe in school.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Anchorage School District has changed the protocol it uses to keep kids safe in emergency situations that can range from natural disasters to an active shooter . The ALICE protocol, which the district implemented in the 2016-2017 school year, has been replaced by SRP, which stands for Standard Response Protocol.

ASD’s Senior Director of Emergency Management, Jared Woody, said the new protocol is being used widely across the country and represents best practices, and unlike ALICE, the program is free to school districts. The change shouldn’t be a big one for students and staff, according to Woody, who said it mostly simplifies language to make the response in a given situation not only clearer, but standard across the district. “We now have single-word terms for actions that we want students and staff to complete, a standardized set of instructions across that, and we can communicate that to parents, students, teachers much more clearly,” he said. The Anchorage School District is changing the protocols it uses to keep kids safe in school One thing that is different from the ALICE protocol, Woody said, is that there is no longer an emphasis on fighting back against a violent intruder, nor is fighting back part of the training drills that schools are required to hold twice a year. “SRP allows for that kind of action, but it’s not something that we emphasize,” he said. “Because we do understand that is traumatizing for some of our younger students, it can be traumatizing for some of our teachers and some of our parents to have to think about as well.” Woody said principals will be allowed to choose age-appropriate scenarios for drills that don’t necessarily involve an active shooter. “For a lockdown drill, we don’t have to talk about a bad person walking into the classroom with a weapon or anything like that,” he said. “We want to talk, ‘Okay, if we hear this over the intercom, here’s the actions we take.’”The Beach Boys cancel Alaska State Fair performanceFirst big fall storm hits Southcentral, prompting warnings Anchorage hotel owner, manager plead not guilty to charges claiming Spenard hotel used to distribute drugs
