The Anchorage School Board has voted to close Nunaka Valley and Lake Hood elementary schools, citing the need for operational efficiency, staffing support, and improved access to specialized services. ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Anchorage School Board voted to close Nunaka Valley and Lake Hood elementary schools, chosen from theirThe district says closing and consolidating schools will allow the district to operate more efficiently, help with staffing needs, and give children better access to specialty services.
In Bear Valley’s case, that included the fact that the building was being used by an active community association to offer programs that weren’t available in the relatively isolated community. “Since the announcement, we’ve all learned quite a bit,” Holleman said. “A lot of people probably think of one elementary school as being like another, but the reality is, the neighborhoods are different, the staffs are different and the way they connect with people is different.”
One school that plans to be out in force at the meeting is Baxter Elementary, according to the school’s PTA president Leslie Edin. Edin said their school was originally on a list to close in three years and was surprised when the district announced that, if approved, schools on the list would close at the end of this school year.
