So far this year, 43 people believed to be homeless have died outdoors in the city, far surpassing any previous annual record.
Anchorage Police investigate a death on the Delaney Park Strip near 9th Avenue and F Street in Anchorage on May 23, 2023.
Still, city leaders have called outdoor deaths an important measure of how Anchorage is doing in caring for unhoused people, and has made preventing such deaths a priority. Vehicles and tents are scattered across a municipal-owned vacant lot adjacent to the Cuddy Family Midtown Park off Denali Street on Tuesday.
