Residents in a Muldoon neighborhood are still cleaning up from a powerful windstorm that ripped through Anchorage, causing significant damage to homes and properties. The storm, one of the worst in recent history, left debris scattered across yards, damaged roofs, and toppled trees. While most residents regained power on Tuesday, some were still without service. City officials opened community centers to provide temporary shelter and resources to those affected.

ANCHORAGE , Alaska (KTUU) - Residents in one Muldoon neighborhood are still cleaning up days after the worst windstorms in recent history swept through Anchorage . Tucked away off 32nd and Muldoon Road — many fences are gone, some roofs are covered in tarps, and debris is scattered across backyards. Steven Wood has one of the bigger jobs ahead of him.

When a chunk of the roof blew off the house behind his, it destroyed part of his shed, a gazebo, and a window where his two daughters had been standing moments before. “I seen it coming at the house and I yelled at the girls, ‘incoming run!’ and they were going to go into the office window to look at the wind damage, and all of sudden, boom, it hits the house,” Wood said. Wood was working diligently to clean up the mess outside on Tuesday concerned it might get covered with snow. Two doors down John Whitinger was surveying the damage at the home where he lives with his mother. Whitiger’s small boat — which he keeps on the side of the house — was tossed upside down in the storm and the family lost a large tree. The home was missing fences and a window, that Whitinger said blew out in his Mother’s bedroom early Sunday morning. “She was in bed and all of a sudden she was covered in glass,” Whitinger said, adding that his mother was okay. Most people had power by Tuesday morning but not all. Chugach Electric reported that 1,100 customers were still without power midmorning Tuesday and that some would not have it restored until Wednesday. At the Spenard Rec Center, a city spokeswoman said no one took advantage of a temporary Reception Center set up Monday evening that provided snacks, hot drinks, and a place to relax. Both the Spenard and Fairview Rec Centers waived entrance fees Tuesday for people who wanted to come in, charge a phone, etc. The Spenard Rec Center also offered locker rooms and showers for anyone without water. The city’s Solid Waste Services is helping with clean-up efforts by offering free disposal at Anchorage’s two woodlots through the end of the month. Lots will accept brush and branches, trees less than six feet long as well as wooden fence posts. The woodlots are located at the Anchorage Regional Landfill in Eagle River as well as at the Central Transfer Station at 1208 East 56th Avenue
