On Wednesday, AFD is holding its annual Firefighter Step Mill Challenge at the Alaska Club West. Participants of the challenge will take turns using a stair stepper to climb as many flights of stairs as possible in 11 minutes — with a goal of reaching the equivalent of 110 stories, the same number that were in the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
“It’s pretty amazing to be able to honor those that lost their lives on 9/11, so we do it to kind of remember them,” Matthew Carlson, a firefighter and paramedic, said. “It’s pretty strenuous — 110 floors on a step mill is some hard work — but that’s what they did on that day, so it’s good to be able to remember them and be able to step into their shoes.”
Many firefighters wear their gear to show solidarity and experience what first responders did on 9/11.
