The Anchorage Fire Department reminds residents that fireworks are prohibited within the Municipality of Anchorage, including New Year's Eve. Despite the misconception that fireworks are allowed on New Year's Eve, the ban applies to all types of fireworks, including sparklers and Roman candles.

The Anchorage Fire Department is reminding people that fireworks are prohibited in the Municipality of Anchorage . Fireworks are one of the most popular ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve, and while residents of Anchorage can go see fireworks shows, they cannot light fireworks themselves. Eddie Athey, a fire inspector with the Anchorage Fire Department, says the most common misconception about fireworks in Anchorage is that they are allowed on New Year’s Eve. This is not the case.

“Several years ago, there was a push to amend our municipal code to allow for fireworks, specifically on New Year’s Eve and there is some misconception that that’s still allowable,” Athey said. “So the ban is applicable to all fireworks within the Municipality of Anchorage. Even though it is possible to obtain fireworks from other places, they’re prohibited,” Athey said. “That could include sparklers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, any anything of that nature.” If caught using fireworks, there is a fine of up to $300. However, Athey warns against calling 911 if someone lights fireworks in the neighborhood. “Please be aware that those men and women that are working tonight are oftentimes very busy, especially around the midnight hour. And a phone call to 911, should be for an emergency,” Athey said. Athey recommends people head to downtown Anchorage to see Anchorage’s New Year’s Eve Celebration. The event will begin at 7 p.m., with the fireworks show starting at 8 p.m
