University of Alaska Anchorage students express mixed emotions and hopes for peace following news of a potential ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.

ANCHORAGE , Alaska (KTUU) - College campuses have been the site of large protests over the Israel - Hamas war. College students in Anchorage shared their opinions about the potential ceasefire. The details of the agreement are not yet set in stone, according to mediators, but the ceasefire would go into effect Sunday should an agreement come through. Following the recent news of a ceasefire, University of Alaska Anchorage students spoke about how they felt when they learned of the news.

Kenan Metzger, 21, said despite the uncertainty of what could follow a temporary ceasefire, he believed a reprieve was good news. “I mean, ultimately, it’s a great thing that bullets will not be fired anymore. No matter the outcome after that, it’s a good thing people aren’t dying,” Metzger said. Elisa Karahan, a 19-year-old mechanical engineering major said she wishes peers her age would feel more confident expressing their opinion on subjects some might consider controversial. She said her Muslim family has been impacted personally by the ongoing news of what’s happening in Gaza. “I’m happy that at least there is some shred of hope out there in the future and that people aren’t getting slaughtered just because of where they live and where their land is,” Karahan said. She said when she woke to the news of a potential ceasefire, she was “extremely happy.” Evan Leaf is a 22-year-old civil engineering major, who said he “disdains violence” and despite being geographically separated from the conflict feels extreme sympathy for “violence against people that can’t defend themselves.” Leaf said he believes there needs to be a two-state solution to end the violence resulting from the conflict. He said he’s trying to keep a realistic mindset about what could change. “I’m very optimistic, but realistically I’m hesitant to believe that the ceasefire will be permanent,” Leaf said. Max Hume, 22, said he felt that the Israel-Hamas war is an “inescapable topic,” adding he’s spent a significant amount of time on social media listening to Gazans share their experience of what it was like to be in the middle of the conflict. He also said shortly after learning of the ceasefire he saw notifications of an air raid siren sounding off and felt scared at the potential for a ceasefire to fall through. However, Hume continues to be hopeful for positive change. “I know that there is definitely conflict with regards to the land that Israel possesses...I don’t know how easily that’s going to be resolved, even in my lifespan,” Hume said. “But the war being over and potential hope for the citizens of Gaza and the Palestinians to, you know, live be able to live. That alone brings warmth to my heart.
