The potent low-pressure system, which slammed into Southcentral Alaska late Saturday, unleashed torrential rain and high winds, causing widespread damage to power infrastructure. Chugach Electric Association (CEA) reported extensive repairs were needed, with some members potentially remaining without power until Wednesday.
The storm uprooted and shattered trees, damaging power lines, poles, and other electrical equipment throughout the Anchorage Bowl. Schools in Anchorage closed on Monday due to power outages and weather-related issues, but reopened on Tuesday. In contrast, schools in the Mat-Su and Susitna Valley remained closed for a second consecutive day due to icy conditions. CEA confirmed over 1,100 customers remained without power, facing more than 100 individual outages. Residents on the Hillside described the sounds of humming generators as households struggled to stay warm amidst plunging temperatures in the 20s.CEA officials acknowledged the extensive damage, stating that it was making restoration efforts more time-consuming. They emphasized that despite working on the largest outages first, crews remained in specific regions to ensure efficiency and safety. The municipality responded to the crisis by opening a temporary warming center on East Fourth Avenue on Sunday, which quickly reached capacity. The center extended its hours on Monday and Tuesday to provide continued assistance. Additionally, the Spenard Recreation Center was opened as a temporary shelter for those still without power, offering warmth and access to electricity. The storm also caused structural damage, including a partially collapsed pedestrian bridge onto the Seward Highway. The Anchorage Fire Department responded to numerous calls throughout and after the storm. The municipality announced free disposal of woody debris at city woodlots through January 31st, providing relief for residents dealing with storm-related debris.
