The Anchorage Assembly will consider an ordinance to limit where homeless people can camp at its Tuesday meeting.

Alaska's News Source is telling Alaska's storyANCHORAGE, Alaska - On Tuesday, the Anchorage Assembly will consider an ordinance proposed by Mayor Dave Bronson that would change city code to limit areas where homeless people can camp.

The revised ordinance would limit encampments to no more than 50 tents or structures. It would also create a no camping zone that extends a quarter mile from established shelters. That means camps like the one at Third and Ingra wouldn’t be allowed.Jessica Parks, Chief Operating Officer of the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness, said she was greatly relieved to see the idea of criminalizing camping was removed from the newest version of the ordinance.

The ordinance also allows for something new: the ability for the city to designate safe parking areas for homeless people living in vehicles. Those areas would also be limited to 50 vehicles or less. “Having those resources available to people who are unsheltered can not only help them be healthier and the space be healthier, but the impacts are greatly reduced if there’s a place to put your trash for example, versus just having bags of trash just start to pile up,” Parks said.
