Debate on a resolution to eliminate free provided lunches for Anchorage Assembly members during meetings was postponed indefinitely Tuesday.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Debate on a resolution to eliminate free provided lunches for Anchorage Assembly members during meetings was postponed indefinitely Tuesday. The resolution, co-sponsored by members Jared Goecker, Scott Myers, and Keith McCormick, sought to clarify the language used in last year’s budget omnibus amendment, which passed unanimously.

As a cost-cutting and member accountability issue, the group had previously sought to eliminate $33,800 from the budget that was set aside “for meals during Assembly Meetings and Worksessions”. Ultimately, about half of that amount was eliminated under the amendment. Despite the omnibus amendment’s unanimous passage, free meals have still been served at Assembly meetings, prompting the trio to propose the resolution to force the issue. “I just felt like that undermined the trust of the vote we took,” McCormick said. “Let’s tighten our belts before we ask the residents of Anchorage to tighten theirs on our behalf.” Once the resolution came to debate, however, that goal was not realized. After nearly an hour of discussion, debate was postponed indefinitely.“My concern is that we have one member who generates misinformation and who doesn’t attend meetings,” Constant declared during the debate. Ultimately, while no consensus on the meals could be reached, several assemblymembers expressed support for an adjusted version of the resolution proposed by Constant that included mandatory attendance tracking for all members as an accountability measure.“They’re being penny-wise,” Constant said. “It seems to me to be just a political action to try to smear the assembly and its staff.”It is unclear when the resolution will be discussed again. An Anchorage security guard was shot while doing his job.
