The Anchorage Assembly will be taking up the proposed prohibition on camping on public lands again at their meeting on Tuesday, with a potential vote possible. The ordinance, AO 2025-74, has already gone through it’s two rounds of public hearing, the most recent was on Friday at a special meeting scheduled specifically for that purpose.

ANCHORAGE , Alaska - In a vote of 7 to 5 the Anchorage Assembly voted to criminalize camping on specific public lands at their meeting on Tuesday.at a special meeting scheduled specifically for that purpose.

At the end of that meeting, after nearly four hours of public comments, the assembly postponed the item. “A vote should happen tonight,” Assembly Chair Chris Constant said in an interview prior to the meeting. On or within 200 feet of the Coastal Trail, Chester Creek Trail, Ship Creek Trail, Fish Creek Trail, and Campbell Creek Trail; or any other paved trail; measured from the paved edge of the trail On or within 200 feet of any portion, fork, or tributary of Campbell Creek, Chester Creek, Fish Creek, Ship Creek; or any other water body ; measured from the edge of the water On or in any street, road, highway, sidewalk, bridge, tunnel, railroad track, snow disposal site, or runwayany street, road, or highway, if the street, road, or highway that has a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or greater; or any railroad track or runwayThe lot line of any parcel containing any school or licensed childcare centerThe ordinance also criminalizes construction, or the possession of construction materials with the intent to construct in the above specified areas.“We’ve been through 8 hours of public hearing,” Constant said. “We’ve heard from 100 plus members of the public and tonight’s the night. There are a number of amendments.”Two of the three amendments that passed added clarifying language around criminalizing possession of construction materials, making it clear that carrying construction materials through a public zone to a place such as a construction site was not criminal, nor is having the materials in public zones without the intent to build. The third amendment added a section requiring the municipality to prepare a report for the assembly one year from passage of the ordinance detailing its efficacy.Constant was also opposed to the ordinance, and as thus voted against it. “We definitely got a flavor of what the public had to say,” Constant said. “And in fact, it was almost 3 to 1 opposed to the ordinance in all of its forms.”‘She will never meet her father’: brother of man shot and killed responds after convicted killer sentenced to 77 yearsAs Senate advances Trump’s $9 billion cuts, Sullivan touts Alaska radio deal while Public Media head “blindsided”
