ANC is wrong to absolve Ramaphosa from Phala Phala scrutiny, says former president Thabo Mbeki

Former president Thabo Mbeki has slated the ANC and its leadership over its continued protection of President Cyril Ramaphosa from accounting through Parliament over the Phala Phala money theft scandal.

While the ANC has insisted that law enforcement agencies be first allowed to perform their work, including the Public Protector, opposition parties have insisted that Parliament had to do its oversight duties and conduct its own probe on the saga. He described the rejection of the MPC by the ANC as puzzling, adding that it “communicated the unequivocal statement to the masses of the people that we do not want Parliament to seek and gain a deeper and comprehensive understanding” on the Phala Phala matter.

“The recent report by Sars Commissioner Edward Kieswetter that no record of the declaration to customs has been found of the US $580 000 President Ramaphosa says was stolen deepens the puzzle about what exactly happened at Phala Phala farm. “Without a doubt, the wrong positions we took with regard to the Nkandla matter impacted negatively on the standing of the ANC with many among the masses of our people. It is equally without doubt that any wrong position we take with regard to the Phala Phala matter will also in equal measure or more impact negatively on the standing of the ANC with many among the masses of our people,” he added.

He said the ANC was wrong by rejecting the initiation of a parliamentary process focused on looking into the allegations of criminal activities at Eskom, which he said presented an opportunity to unmask those responsible.
