In the Western Cape, the only one of the nine provinces where the ANC is not in power, the party was polling at 29%.

The African National Congress in the Eastern Cape was in a celebratory mood as the party looked on course for another stirring victory in one of its heartland provinces.

The ANC had secured over 1.2 million of the almost 1.8 million votes counted thus far. The provisional results are slightly down on the party’s 2014 results when it topped 70%. The ruling party had seemingly wrapped up victories in six of South Africa’s nine provinces by Friday morning. In the Western Cape, the only one of the nine provinces where the ANC is not in power, the party was polling at 29%, significantly behind the DA which had almost 55% of the vote.
