Anakin Skywalker's scavenged podracer became famous when he won the Boonta Eve Classic, but he would face it again under surprising circumstances.
Anakin Skywalker wins his freedom in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, but some Star Wars fans may wonder what becomes of his famous podracer after the film. Qui-Gon Jinn sells the now-famous vehicle, but the Star Wars Legends continuity reveals that a character with ties to Anakin's podracing career purchased it.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Less than a year after The Phantom Menace’s theatrical release, Anakin Skywalker’s podracer and its new owner showed up in issue 14 of Star Wars: Republic, by Timothy Truman and Tom Lyle. The issue opens with a podrace on Malastare, with none other than Sebulba piloting the familiar pair of Radon-Ulzer 620C engines, now painted orange like the dug’s original podracer.
Anakin Beat His Original Podracer Although Sebulba went on to win many more podraces in Anakin’s former podracer, he would eventually give the vehicle to his son, Hekula, who followed in his father’s footsteps and became a podracer pilot. Hekula and Anakin raced against each other in an illegal podrace, as shown in the Jedi Quest books.
Even the destruction of Anakin’s podracer did not end its story. As shown in Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Anakin Skywalker finally had his long-awaited rematch with his old rival, Sebulba. While Sebulba used a new podracer with a pair of Collar Pondrat Plug-G Gargantua engines, Skywalker used the parts of his old vehicle to modify two Radon-Ulzer 1240C engines, giving them a similar appearance to his original podracer.
In many ways, Anakin's history with his podracer represents how he was never able to break free of his past on Tatooine. While he left young, the emotions of his childhood would return throughout his life, influencing his fall to the dark side and eventual redemption. His piloting skills, talent with machines, and experiences living as a slave echoed out across the years, and many of his darkest acts as Darth Vader were active rejections of his former life as Anakin.
