BLM Alaska Fire Service has reported a likelihood of the McDonald Fire increasing with more smoke in light of warmer and drier weather this weekend.
There was .75 inches of rain reported by the Blair Lakes remote weather station, which allowed firefighters to prepare cabins along 5 Mile Creek. This included the successful installment of sprinklers for all 21 cabins as well as cleared vegetation.
The BLM Alaska Fire Service also stated the firefighters cleared trails for better access and should have have all structure protections completed by end of day, June 15. The fire is currently at 32,725.9 acres, so there has not been acreage gain within the last few days. The BLM Alaska Fire Service attributes the fire’s lack of growth to the large amount of rain the interior received over the last week.
However, now that skies are clear, BLM Alaska Fire Service expects to get better mapping of the McDonald Fire, for a more accurate acreage count. There are currently 54 personnel working on the fire which includes the Pioneer Peak Hotshots and Gannet Glacier. These crews continue to work near Harding Lake and are on standby to respond to any other areas within the interior.is still in effect for Tanana South, BE SET=FIRE IN THE AREA; PREPARE TO LEAVE IMMEDIATELY!
