What sets Hach-Otis apart from other old-growth forests is the diversity of its species, said Adam Wohlever, regional preserve manager for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. He directed their attention to a thick-trunked tulip poplar with deeply furrowed bark that is close to 150 years old. But Lillich gave him the same answer he would have given any other logger looking to extract one of the aging gems from the woodland he has doted over for decades. The birds were coming and going when Lillich was a boy growing up beside a potato field on the east side of the Chagrin River. He would cross the river near the site of an old nudist colony when he wanted to ascend the bluffs and traipse through the area that’s now the preserve.
The preserve is located at the end of Skyline Drive, just off Chagrin River Road and north of U.S. Route 6. It’s open to the public. There’s a parking lot and a boardwalk that takes you part way into the woods. But be advised, the park closes at 4 p.m. That’s to keep teenagers from going there after school and doing things they shouldn’t.
