Umpire Adrian Johnson's call ended Thursday's Chicago White Sox-Baltimore Orioles game, killing a White Sox rally and leaving many questioning an obscure rule.
The ending to Thursday night's game between the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles was so bizarre, that not even the broadcasters could be certain how and why the players were leaving the field as it happened. The pretext: With one out in the ninth inning, Chicago — the home team — had runners on first and second base trailing 8-6. The batter, Andrew Benintendi, hit a pop-up between second and third base. The infield fly rule was in effect.
'There doesn't have to actually even be contact,' Johnson said. 'If he hinders the fielder in the attempt to field a batted ball, intent is not required and it's interference.'Well, almost.Rule 6.
