The NFL's 2020 Draft was like no other. Here's an inside look at how the remote draft held against the background of the coronavirus lockdown went down. And how elements from it are here to stay:
With a captive audience starved for sports, the2020 NFL draft reached more than 55 million total viewers across ABC, ESPN, NFL Network, ESPN Deportes, and digital channels
But how it was presented is the story that has largely been untold. The production showed how far the use of information technology could be pushed in a short period. All told, 600 cameras were used from Goodell’s self-described man cave to the 32 NFL head coaches and general managers to more than 85 draft prospects to groups of fans for each of the teams.
For the league, the question of how to showcase the prospects was treated completely different. Normally, the event will host the top 25 athletes that are seen as being likely to be selected in the 1st round. With the country locked down, and knowing that they could utilize cameras at home, the NFL was able to show far more players and their families from the comfort of their home. “We wanted to make sure we did right by the prospects, and I think we achieved that,” O’Reilly said.
