Team Kevin, comprised of friends and running partners Kevin DiLegge and Matt Burdette, became the first duo to participate in and complete the Marine Corps’ 50-kilometer ultramarathon.
Matthew Burdette pushes running partner Kevin Dilegge to get their medals Sunday after finishing the Marine Corps’ 50-kilometer ultramarathon. Team Kevin — as runners Kevin DiLegge and Matt Burdette have come to be known for nearly a decade — crossed its latest finish line at Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon in Arlington, greeted by applause from service members and congratulations from admiring competitors. It marked a new milestone for both the distinguished event and an enduring friendship.
The pair first raced together at the Charles Street 12 in August 2014, as Burdette teamed up with two other volunteers to push DiLegge 12 miles down the historic Baltimore roadway. Right away, Burdette was drawn to DiLegge’s competitiveness, the way he’d become animated when they passed other runners and quietly disappointed whenever their group of four lagged behind.Burdette figured he and DiLegge might be able to go faster running as a duo.
“Kevin’s run with so many other people, but nobody’s Matt,” said Mary DiLegge, Kevin’s mother. “As much as there’s a difference physically, they just connect in such a way and know each other so well.”After completing the 12-miler, Team Kevin started tackling marathons — 12 of them, at an average pace of 3:45. Among the first and most memorable of these was. The following year, they conquered their first Marine Corps Marathon.
After Team Kevin completed its longest run to date, Burdette reached over the top of DiLegge’s jogger to pat him on the chest. Later, Burdette draped a chunky race medal around his friend, who had a wide, toothy grin stretched across his face. “Mission accomplished,” declared the public address announcer.
