A rare bird egg hatched at the Houston Zoo, making it the first in almost 30 years.

Courtesy of Houston ZooA wattled curassow chick and its parents can be seen by Houston Zoo visitors in the Savanna Aviary inside South America’s Pantanal area. The black-feathered bird is an endangered species, so each hatch is significant, the zoo said. There are only 25 wattled curassows in captivity across five organizations within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and six are in Houston.

You might hear the birds before you see them at the zoo as they have a distinct whistle. The females have red and brown feathers while the males have some white feathers. The male guards the nest while the female incubates the eggs. The baby wattled curassow chick can be found with its parents in the Savanna Aviary inside South America’s Pantanal at the Houston Zoo.These birds are native to the Amazon rainforest, found in Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia and Peru. While their numbers are rapidly declining in the wild, the Houston Zoo has cared for the species for the past 20 years to increase their population.
