Quarterbacks for the D.C. school for the deaf and hard of hearing will use special helmets Saturday against Hilbert College that allow them to see play-calls in augmented reality.

When Gallaudet University takes the field Saturday, the Bison will be bringing a piece of equipment that could turn into a game changer, and not just for football players who happen to be deaf or hard of hearing.

Both are welcome developments for a team that, in a world of shouts and whistles, relies on visual communication. The normal process, in which Gallaudet players have to stare at the sideline to get the play-call, has worked well enough to allow the Bison to enjoy their fair share of success in the Division III Eastern Collegiate Football Conference. GallaudetAs Washington explained, though, making sure he gets the correct play-call can occasionally be tricky, including when the Bison are near the goal line. “I can’t always see coaches ASL from far away,” the junior quarterback from Citronelle, Ala., wrote.

As for reducing the risk of physical harm, Goldstein said “one of the biggest things we struggle with is hearing whistles.” That can be problematic, he continued, when opposing ballcarriers keep going after an official has blown the play dead.“Our guys on defense don’t hear whistles, and they attack,” the coach said. “They are aggressive. If the referee blows a whistle and an offensive player is making an athletic move, he is getting tattooed. Like, we are not stopping.
