Museums and arts institutions within communities of color are often not given the same support needed to thrive as their larger-scale counterparts. Arts leader Stephanie Cunningham shares more on what led her to cofound an organization and birth a movement to counter this narrative.
Through this, Cunningham works to counter historical omissions, misconceptions, and problematic depictions of communities by showcasing artistic and cultural contributions often absent from mainstream art spaces. These greater engagement opportunities also provide economic opportunities for Black, Indigenous, and all people of color in the arts field.
The arts entities featured are leaders of community-centered over collection-centered approaches. Through culturally responsive pedagogy, the Museum Hue team has found they place people and the community’s interests and needs at the center of their practice; they are better able to hone into enriching constituencies' experiences through their offerings–exhibitions, programs, and social services.
The initiative’s best practices can be a guide for the future of the arts and provoke new thinking throughout the sector. To date, HueArts’ key findings have highlighted how deeply embedded arts entities are in their neighborhoods and often relied upon to provide more than just arts programming.
