The long-forgotten Dallas Branch crossed through the city before it was put underground in the early 1900s. At the Nasher, Mary Miss traces its path.

Dallas is a city of creeks and streams, natural systems that have made life here possible for millennia. When the city was founded in the middle of the 19th century, settlers relied on them for fresh water.
“We’ve removed ourselves so much from the environments that we live in, especially in cities,” Miss says in a video produced for the show. “I really have this aspiration to try to allow people to understand or connect with the natural systems and infrastructure that support their lives.”I’ve been an admirer of Miss’ work for many years; in 2004, I served as the editor of aon her work for the publisher Princeton Architectural Press.
That history is somewhat obscure. A bird’s-eye depiction of the city, produced in 1872, shows the Dallas Branch as a tree-lined stream weaving its way through small houses and groves on its path to the Trinity. What is now the Arts District was then a bucolic community of simple, single-story Monopoly-style homes.
