One of the three refugees who have been released by the Hatfield Magistrate’s Court in Pretoria after charges against them were withdrawn, is appealing for help for those still being kept in custody.

They are charged with contravening South Africa’s Immigration Act. Lawyers for Human Rights are preparing an urgent application to prevent the group’s possible deportation.Elisha Ndundu who fled the rebel war in the DRC almost a decade ago, says any attempt to deport them back to their countries will not be in the interest of the refugees.

“Eish, I feel like the UN needs to do more to assist them. Because these people ran away from their country. And they came asking for help. During the 2015 xenophobic they took their documents and now they are arrested. So [we] don’t know where to go.”
