The meme economy is in full swing, and a chicken nugget from a McDonald's BTS meal shaped like an 'Among Us' character just sold for an insane price.
What’s the more responsible use of your time, getting a degree or combing through piles of oddly shaped meat? Based on an extensive study with a sample size of 1, I’m going to go ahead and say it’s the latter. On May 28th, somebody listed a chicken nugget shaped like a character from the gaming phenomenonon eBay. And then, because this is 2021 and things are getting sort of out of hand, it has now sold for $99,997. I’m just going to go ahead and call that $100,000.
The seller promises that the nugget in question will be frozen and sealed before transit so as to maintain as close to freshness as makes sense, in this particular situation.
This is of course just the latest example of meme-powered capitalism coursing through pandemic-addled minds/economy. Dogecoin was a dumb joke from the mid-2000s until it briefly wound up with a market cap of $90 billion. NFTs of freely available digital art pieces sell for tens of millions, the stock of a deeply troubled video game retailer has remained inflated by something like a factor of 10, etc., etc.
