An unrehearsed history class played out in real time at the 103-foot Mount Davidson Cross. Around 250 people, Mayor London Breed included, watched a blue-stained copper box unearthed and opened.
Mayor London Breed examines soil from the original groundbreaking of the Mount Davidson Cross, which was buried in a time capsule in 1934 and opened April 1, 2023.The problem, as it turned out, wasn’t whether any of the contents of a time capsule buried 89 years ago at San Francisco’s highest peak had survived the decades. Rather, it was going to be organizing it all.
After the box was sawed open with a small power tool, Gabi Moreta of the San Francisco Historical Society started removing the contents with gloves as they were announced one by one. The first item taken out, a business card for a local pastor, drew some chuckles from the crowd. Of the many items left to be taken out and documented, Moreta said, “A lot of it was crumpled, so that’s gonna be fun.”
Perhaps more surprising was the condition of the items, almost none of which were wrapped. The colors on a thick red-and-gold 1933 business directory, the comic pages of the San Francisco Chronicle, a red-white-and-blue ribbon, and the blue cover of the San Francisco Municipal Record, all looked like they could have been screened yesterday.
