Christian Cooper, an avid and well-known birder in the park, had recorded a video of his disturbing encounter with Ms. Cooper , whom he approached after noticing that she had taken her dog off of its leash in the Ramble, an area of the park where dogs are required to remain leashed at all times. Mr. Cooper reminded her of the rules and asked her to leash her dog, then tried to give the dog a treat when she refused — but Ms.
The video, which was shared by Mr. Cooper’s sister on Twitter, quickly went viral and led to renewed attention on the frequency with which white people falsely accuse Black people of crimes — often with horrifying consequences — or weaponize the threat to do so.
