A still of Amy Adams standing in Nocturnal Animals.

Has everyone forgotten when one of the most influential cultural figures of our time brought several A-listers together and made a movie that could put Nicolas Winding Refn to shame with its twisted thrills? The movie is celebrating a decade this year, and its director is only now putting together a new project, which might get a premiere at one of the fall festivals if everything goes as planned.

He made his filmmaking debut in 2009, after having already established himself as a legend in his field. The debut movie received widespread critical acclaim and earned its lead the prestigious Volpi Cup at the Venice International Film Festival along with an Academy Award nomination. The filmmaker's sophomore feature — the neo-noir movie we're talking about here — was equally acclaimed. Based on the novel"Tony and Susan" by Austin Wright, the film centers on two intersecting narratives, one real and the other imagined. An art gallery owner played by Amy Adams reads a novel written by her ex-husband, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, and vividly imagines the novel, which is presented as a separate narrative. The movie also features Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Isla Fisher, and Ellie Bamber as the imagined characters, while Michael Sheen, Laura Linney, and Armie Hammer play the"real world" characters. The film received positive reviews and is currently streaming on a new platform. In its theatrical run a decade ago, it grossed $32 million against a reported budget of $22 million. However, beneath its immaculate outer layer was a story of harsh violence, unspeakable tragedy, and cruel twists of fate. The critic Peter Travers described Nocturnal Animals as"a stunning film noir that resonates with ghostly, poetic terror." Ford is now putting together his third feature, Cry to Heaven, which features a star-studded cast including Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult, Adele, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, and Owen Cooper, among others.
