Passenger service has been suspended since Sept. 30 to complete a track stabilization project still underway at San Clement

Amtrak will resume weekend passenger service between San Diego and Orange counties Saturday for the first time since it was suspended Sept. 30 to begin a track stabilization project still underway at San Clemente.

The work is expected to conclude by the end of March, though no date has been released for when weekday passenger service will resume. OCTA’s Metrolink passenger service, which went as far south as the Oceanside Transit Center until Sept. 30, remains suspended south of San Clemente.Freight trains run by BNSF Railway have continued to operate throughout the construction, although they travel slowly and less frequently through the area, and usually at night.

The slope movement occurred within a 700-foot-long section of a recurring landslide below the Cyprus Shore community south of the San Clemente Pier. The railroad tracks there moved about 28 inches toward the ocean between September 2021 and September 2022 because of storm surge and erosion below the tracks and the gradual movement of the slope above the tracks.
