Homewood and Amtrak officials marked the full resumption of daily rail service Monday at Homewood's historic train station, which underwent a $15 million rehab.
Homewood's Amtrak station, built in 1923 in a mission revival style meant to mimic the clubhouse at nearby Ravisloe Country Club, during the renovation.
The return of the second Illini and Saluki train comes as Amtrak has completed a $15 million renovation of the station, including making it complaint with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.Last month, Amtrak completed remodeling of the ticketing area inside the station, which is now staffed daily.
Amtrak is trying to fill jobs across its system as it sees ridership rebounding from the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and said last month that it expects ridership and revenue to be above 90% of pre-COVID levels by the end of fiscal year 2023 next September.
