Out of 378 applicants, just 25 were chosen to go to the Amps Institute’s Shaping Equity through Conservation Entrepreneurial camp held in Montgomery.
Over the course of three days, students were challenged to come up with a full business plan and present it to a panel of judges. President of Amps Institute , James Amps, says he wants to encourage students to be problem solvers and go-getters.
“We help them to understand how to run a business and how to be more creative,” said Amps. “Since we’re sponsored by theTo get some background information before they started planning their business pitches, the institute took students to several agriculture-related businesses. When they returned, students were split up into teams of five to come up with their game plan.
“When they come back, then they start processing how they can solve problems,” said Amps. “At each of those places, they gave ideas on what their challenges were, and so that’s what they’re trying to do. They come up and figure out how to solve some of those challenges.” Entrepreneurial experience and mentorship aren’t the only things these students are receiving. There’s also the chance to win some big bucks at the pitch competition.
First place will receive $3,500, second place will receive $2,500, and third place will receive $1,000.“I never thought I could do something like that,” said Suzanna Calhoun, a senior ambassador for the retreat. “I never thought I would be able to be a leader. I just didn’t believe in myself like that.”“After that, I was like, ‘I feel like I can do this,’” she said.
