Eric Adams released a $99.7 billion budget Tuesday that funds many of the new mayor’s priorities while ballooning future deficits, all while inflation and the war in Ukraine threaten the city’s long-term economic stability.
NEW YORK —
“There are four main areas we will focus on as we go forward: Protecting our people, growing our economy, uplifting our youth and building our infrastructure,” Adams said.have spending priorities of their own But over the long term, the additional spending will still eclipse tax windfalls and the mayor’s savings plan: The budget projects more than $11 billion in deficits from the 2024 through 2026 fiscal years, up from $8 billion two months ago. By law, the city budget must be balanced upon adoption, leading mayors to routinely push shortfalls into future years.
“They identified a whole bunch of new priorities — many of them are good — but he did nothing to improve productivity or the structure of government to offset that,” said Andrew Rein, president of the budget commission. “So we’re setting ourselves up for a future crisis, and that risks New Yorker’s health and safety.”
