Amid recent homicides, Harrisburg residents meet again to talk about curbing gun violence

Organized by resident Lavet Henderson and non profit organization Friends of Midtown, the event was not only to discuss answers but to also acknowledge unsolved homicide cases.

by urging the public to become involved in preventing gun violence in the city.

Harrisburg Buerau of Police Captain Atah Akakpo-Martin and First Assistant District Attorney Mike Sprow explained programs the Harrisburg Bureau of Police have in place to help victims of trauma and mental health. Those include the chaplaincy program, Dauphin County Crisis Intervention Team training and more.The first one took place Feb. 15One person in the audience said children in the community need to build a bond in the police. However, Akakpo-Martin said that has been difficult.

“We are trying to build more of a bridge with the younger generation and community because that is sometimes where our issues start when we’re talking about gun violence,” said Akakpo-Martin. Sprow said gathering evidence is one of the most frustrating things they experience on a regular basis because in order to bring cases to court they need to have witnesses and evidence to put cases on.
