Old friends have been alienated by Britain since Brexit and few new friends have been made
rumbles on inevitably and ruthlessly into a third week, recent days have seen a procession of Western leaders arrive in Israel to stand at the country’s side.
Tensions along Israel’s border with Lebanon have continued to tick up. Hezbollah and the Israel Defence Forces are exchanging fire daily and Israeli communities close by have been evacuated. Foreign embassies have started advising their citizens to leave Lebanon while they still can. Pro-Iranian militia attacked a US airbase in Iraq; after a muted initial response in the West Bank to Israel’s bombing campaign, the streets are now lit up in protest.
In recent years the UK has cut £90m from its budget for conflict prevention in the Middle East and north Africa and no longer has a Foreign Office minister dedicated to the region. It’s not without some irony that the one country in the Middle East that still regards the UK as a major player is Iran, the country which funds and arms Hamas and Hezbollah.
