Sixty\u002Dthree per cent of new hires in 2021 belonged to an equity group and 60 per cent of employees overall were members of an equity group.
Police Chief Troy Cooper told the board that the number of applications overall have been decreasing over the last five to 10 years, which was confirmed by the police’s director of human resources, Lisa Olson. She said there’s a general labour shortage across all positions and across all industries.
“I think it’s up to us to do a better job of recruitment. In years past, we didn’t have to do much recruitment, people came to us, and now, we’re competing with other employers for the same limited pool of resources,” he said. City police continues to fall short of targets for a diverse workplace in Saskatoon set out by the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission.
In 2002, by comparison, about 33 per cent of Saskatoon Police Service employees belonged to an equity group. Over that same period of time, the number of positions within the police department grew by 56 per cent from 386 positions to 604, both sworn officers and out-of-scope positions.
