Amid early SEC success, Dan Hurley says the best league in the nation will be determined by who wins the NCAA championship

UConn head coach Dan Hurley celebrates with the trophy after their win against Purdue in the NCAA college Final Four championship basketball game, Monday, April 8, 2024, in Glendale, Ariz. began the 2024-25 college basketball campaign by saying that the Big East is the best college basketball conference in the nation.

“It doesn’t matter how many really good teams that you have in your league,” Hurley, the Jersey City native and formerguard, said Tuesday on a conference call in response to a question from NJ Advance Media. “Is your league producing the best team in the country? I think that’s what makes the best league. Does your league have the best team in the country that wins the national championship? To me, that’s what sports is all about.

The Big East, meantime, only has one top-8 seed in Marquette, with UConn currently a projected 3 or 4 seed and St. John’s in the 9/10 region. Lunardi has Creighton among his “Next Four Out.” “Villanova is clearly an NCAA team and...they’re going to have to have a great Big East season,” Hurley said.
