Amherst is ranked 25th in this week's cleveland.com Top 25.

EATON TWP., Ohio – Amherst and Midview – two programs that were coming off some down seasons – came into Friday night’s Southwestern Conference opener sporting undefeated records for the first time in recent memory.Amherst’s defense starting the game with a goal-line stand. It ended the game with a goal-line stand. It forced a fumble just before the Middies would have scored the go-ahead touchdown that turned into a touchback.

“I owe this defense some steak dinners this week. Don’t let my wife hear this, but we’re gonna be broke this week,” Thome said. “Our defensive staff comes up with a great game plan, I just let them do what they do. “I do , but at the end of the day, it’s the ref’s call and I’m not going to argue it,” Midview coach Jack Armstrong said.“It started off bad, but our coaches preach to us to not give up on any play,” he said. “That’s what we did. Me and Brady tried to chase him down, and it went in our favor.

Williams took a 6-yard sack from Maeson Morales on the first play, followed by a 3-yard run by McMahon. Williams was tackled for no gain on third-and-goal from the 5 with 8 seconds remaining, and the Middies used their final timeout for the final play. Amherst scored what turned out to be the winning touchdown after a 16-play, 80-yard drive to start the third quarter. Norris capped the march with an 8-yard touchdown scramble with 4:44 left in the third – his third and final touchdown of the game.

“These seniors don’t quit,” Thome said. “They’ve been through every single thing you can be in with a high school career. Being down on the 1, our defense is still gonna roll and still gonna give everything they’ve got. There’s just no quit in them.” It really seemed that way when Midview’s ensuing offensive possession ended on a sack-fumble recovered by Shaddai Cooper at the Comet 41.
