The web of efforts is ad-hoc, with some funding coming from individual donors and companies and some from philanthropists. Though there is a special visa offered to those who have directly worked with the U.S. government, and some 77,000 Afghans have immigrated to the United States on the visa, the process takes an average of two years, and nearly 71,000 people remain backlogged, according to the Migration Policy Institute.
